In the process of water softening or partial softening, the natural lime-carbonic acid balance is disrupted when the lime is removed. The free carbonic acid makes the water ‘aggressive’ and can cause rust to form, particularly in galvanised pipe systems, resulting in hazardous corrosion.


This problem is solved by the addition of relevant minerals, and BWT mineral dosing binds the excess carbonic acid on the one hand while, on the other, trapping any remaining calcium in the water (residual hardness). BWT dosing pumps inject a precise dosage of minerals into the water.

Dosing pumps for the correct dosage

Dosing pumps are used to protect pipe systems and, in particular, to tackle corrosion problems. A mineral added to the water attaches itself to the interior surfaces of the pipes and inhibits the corrosive effect of the carbonic acid water on the metal. Specific dosing agents are added in appropriate quantities to the boiler and heating water, cooling water and other technical applications to guarantee the continuous and uninterrupted operation of the systems.


When operating an ion exchanger, a dosing pump should be installed downstream of the softening system. BWT’s dosing pumps are controlled by an integrated water meter.


Addition of dosing agents into the water (mineral dosing)

Limited doses of phosphates are permitted in drinking water in compliance with food standards to prevent the formation of limescale and damage from corrosion. BWT mineral dosing substances are tested in accordance with all the applicable food regulations, and stringent national and international regulations ensure that the BWT phosphates are subjected regularly to the strictest of checks to guarantee the highest level of health and safety.
